Goddess in Indian painting

Gods and Goddesses have been a dominant theme of Indian paintings. The worship of a mother goddess as the source of life and fertility has prehistoric roots.The transformation of that deity into a goddess of cosmic powers was achieved with the composition of the Devi Mahatmya, a text of the fifth to sixth century, when worship of the female principle took on dramatic new dimensions. Images of Indian Goddess paintings have been discovered even among

the ruins of ancient Indian civilizations. Primarily, men represented their experience of the natural world - plants and animals, weapons and carts, etc..

They were worshippers of nature; therefore, natural objects were articulated in lines and colors with great reverence. Such natural deities are still spontaneously represented in Madhubani paintings, Warli paintings, Saura paintings and other tribal paintings. With the onset and rise of Hinduism, goddesses of the Hindu pantheon became the main muse of Indian paintings. Images of Kali, Durga, Lakshmi and others are still rampant in various Indian painting styles. In fact, there are certain styles of Indian painting that have originated from cults of Indian gods and goddesses. They are painted as a part of religious rituals and also to bring blessings.
