This shah kalam miniature painting portrays an old man playing a tune on a traditional musical instrument known as tambura. The painting is executed in a specific brush style called Shah Kalam. The brush is prepared from the hair present in the ears or tail or soft hair on any part of young goat or from the hairs of the ears of cow or calf or from the hairs of the tail of a mongoose. For doing quality work, the brush is made from hairs of squirrel's tail. The painting stands out for its detail, consistency, subtlety and smooth finish.
