This painting depicts Sri Krishna in the act of lifting the Govardhan Parvat (mountain). The miniature is an illustration to the Bhagavata Purana and belong to the Rajasthani School of Miniature paintings, Mewar Kalam. In this painting, Indra is seen on his many tusked elephant ‘Airavata’ riding among the dark rain clouds. Krishna upholds the mountain on his little finger while assuring Nanda who is seen dressed in white like a Mughal Courtier. The rustic cowherds, the maidens of Vraja and the grateful cattle are all seen taking refuge under the mountain held aloft by Krishna. Two sages are seen immersed in meditation on the uplifted mountain covered with trees and wild plants. The cloud army of Indra has been personified.
